Course Overview
Our Level 1 course is designed to introduce you to the basics of acting, laying a strong foundation that builds confidence and skill.
You are guided by a supportive Core Tutor, alongside visiting industry professionals, to help you unlock your creative potential and build strong foundations in acting. The course fosters versatility by encouraging you to explore different roles and collaborate with various actors, giving you the opportunity to work with different directors and styles. This collaborative approach helps develop your adaptability and provides valuable learning experiences to enhance your growth as a performer.
A key focus in Level 1 is fostering relaxation, creativity, and playfulness. The course creates a safe and supportive environment where you can take creative risks without fear of failure. This mindset is essential for building confidence, as it encourages exploration and curiosity. As you embrace this relaxed atmosphere, you quickly build trust with your peers and instructors, enabling you to make significant progress in your acting journey.
The practical aspects of Level 1 cover a comprehensive toolkit of acting techniques, which you explore week by week. Starting with foundational tools like Stanislavski's building blocks, you learn essential methods for creating realistic, layered performances. As the course progresses, you engage with a variety of texts and practitioners, strengthening your skills in movement, vocal techniques, and creative decision-making. In addition to stage craft, you also learn to create self-tape auditions, building confidence in adapting their performances for different media. By the end of the course, many students are surprised by their rapid growth and ability to connect deeply with their work on stage.
SHOWCASE
The term concludes with a showcase performance, where you'll work in pairs or small groups to present short scenes to an audience of fellow participants, tutors, and family. This final sharing is not a formal performance but part of the learning process, helping you manage stage nerves and celebrate the progress of other groups. The showcase fosters a strong community spirit, as working together throughout the term helps everyone achieve more than they imagined, with the local TAL community coming together to celebrate the collective journey.
Entry Requirements
- No prior formal training required.
- A good standard of English language is required.*
- An open mind and the desire to grow and work as a team with other like-minded people.
*English Language Skills
Sessions are delivered in English, so if you are not a native English Speaker it is important that you have sufficient English language skills to cope with the demands of the course. We are not able to offer translation assistance.
Proof of language qualifications is not required but we work to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and its self-assessment table for English. We recommend at least B2 proficiency. This is approximately equivalent to IELTS level 6 or above.
